Radiohead, Lil Wayne Nominated For Album Of The Year Grammy

Remember the 50th Annual Grammy Awards? Alicia Keys duetting with the ghost of Sinatra? Will.i.am rapping nonsense? Album of the Year River: The Joni Letters??? It's easy (and fun!) to make fun of the Grammys, but last year they really deserved it, and viewers voiced their discontent by watching Extreme Makeover instead. For ceremony #51 NARAS shook things up by revealing the nominees in a prime time concert tonight.

The first award's announcement kicked off with a montage of YouTube screens and an acknowledgment that "today it's a digital world, and we're all players in it ... websites connect young artists and fans in a way never before imagined." Which doesn't explain why Katy Perry was snubbed for Best New Artist, but hey that's a promising start. More importantly, Radiohead and Lil Wayne were nominated for Album of the Year. And Foo Fighters played "You're So Vain"? You're full of surprises, 2009 Grammys. Nominees after the jump.

David Lee Roth's "Hot For Teacher" Vocal Track Is MILF-Tastic

You should (and likely do) recall David Lee Roth's "Running With The Devil" isolated vocal track and the mashups it inspired. Offering a new dose of a cappella gymnastics, there's a Diamond Dave stream circulating. This time he's giving 1984's "Hot For Teacher" his all (which it turns out is a lot). He's joined by Eddie and Michael Anthony (and Alex?), a wall of reverb, assorted sound effects, and more words ("I don't feel tardy")/less grunts.

Bionic Hand May Bring The Long Blondes Back

A couple months ago we told you the Long Blondes called it quits after guitarist Dorian Cox had a stroke. Well, with the assistance of the SaeboFlex, a device that "helps patients by supporting their wrists and helping them grasp and release objects," he may be able to play guitar again. Fleetwood Mac To Get Unleashed On 2009 Tour, Re-Release Rumours

Between Lindsey Buckingham solo shots, Vampire Weekend and Death Cab covers, and constantly finding excuses to spin Tusk and Rumours and etc., Fleetwood Mac is one of those "classic" bands that never seem to grow old. Unless you see them in person, because [SPOILER ALERT] they don't look like that pic anymore. Next year you'll be able to pair their timeless material with their timebound bodies: the Mac have promised new tunes, but their upcoming greatest hits tour, called Unleashed, is all about the old. For this first Fleetwood trek in five years, the group promise setlists featuring "all the Mac's many greatest hits." (Sorry Sheryl, this won't include you, and it definitely doesn't include Christine.) They'll hit the road in March and continue on through spring and summer. The first 16 dates are confirmed:

Band To Watch: Cold Cave

Cold Cave is the brainchild of Philadelphia's Wesley Eisold, ex-Some Girls, Give Up The Ghost, XO Skeletons, and currently Ye Olde Maids, etc. We're calling his newest project a Band To Watch, but Eisold received some high-profile press when Fall Out Boy reportedly plagiarized lyrics from his influential hardcore outfit Giving Up The Ghost. He won an out-of-court settlement, is now credited in the liner notes of From Under The Cork Tree and Infinity On High. Eisold's hardcore/punk background rears its head in interesting ways in Ye Olde Maids, but more especially in Cold Cave, a darkwave synth confection with more than enough static and noise cycling through to justify mentions of Prurient and Burning Star Core on his personal MySpace. The songs are danceable, dark, instantly infectious. Think '80s industrial and synth pop over-driven through power electronics. For instance, take a listen to "Sex Ads," which comes from Painted Nails, a three-song 7" released by Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions.

The National's Aaron and Bryce Dessner curated this one, and its contributor list reads like the contents of your iPod, including Arcade Fire, Beirut, Beach House, Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, Andrew Bird, Antony, MMJ, Feist, Ben Gibbard, Spoon, Sufjan, Yeasayer, Yo La Tengo, the National, and a massive etc. All tracks are exclusives, and proceeds benefit the Red Hot Organization, "an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS." Dark Was The Night is out 2/17 on double CD (or triple LP) via 4AD.

The 'Gum Drop LXVI: Hear New MV & EE, Win Diesel Jeans

Prolific deepwoods Vermonters Matt Valentine (who played in the excellently ramshackle Tower Recordings) and Erika Elder are back with Drone Trailer. They're not shy about releasing recordings (together and apart), but the offerings often show up in limited runs or on smaller labels. The forthcoming six-song collection Drone, though, is out 1/20 via the (slightly) easier to locate DiCristina. On it, the duo's backed by three-dude strong Golden Road, as you ought to be able to deduce after listening to the dense, full-band psych of cathartic opener "Anyway." Since we had his ear, we asked Valentine to unpack the lyrics. While you listen, let us know if his analysis helps.

Neko Case Unleashes Her Middle Cyclone Album Art

A.C. Newman is about to release his second solo album Get Guilty, which means it's just about time for fellow multi-tasking New Pornographer Neko Case to (try to) show (him) up with her own extracurricular record. Middle Cyclone is her first collection of new material in three years (following 2006's Fox Confessor Brings The Flood). She recorded the 15 songs -- originals plus covers of Sparks' "Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth" and "Don't Forget Me" by Harry Nilsson (which we witnessed live with some other new tracks) -- in Tucson, Brooklyn, Toronto, and Vermont. The instrumentation is Case backed by a five-piece band plus guest spots by M. Ward, Sarah Harmer, Garth Hudson and members of Los Lobos, Calexico, Lilys, Giant Sand, New Pornos, the Sadies, etc. The album cover, though, is Case by her lonesome, surfing her muscle car.

New Jay-Z (Featuring Santogold) Video - "Brooklyn (Go Hard)"

That Jay-Z/Santogold/Kanye West BK fight song from the Notorious OST now has itself a video dedicated to Brooklyn, to the letter. Director Evan Roth uses typographic illustration, spelling out "Brooklyn" in cascading typeface, the component parts meshing and building full form images of Jigga and Biggie. Cool technique -- true to what each rapper came from (letters and fleeting pieces of their borough) -- which Roth says he's been waiting to give to a Hov video for five years. OPEN THREAD: New “6 Word Biography Book” Has Really Short Life Biographies

Ever wanted to know about someone's entire life but wanted the story in a mini-haiku? The new expanded version of the book Not Quite What I Was Planning is an entire book full of six word life sum ups by some famous people and a lot of average Joes/Janes. Some noteables include: Stephen Colbert: "Well, I thought it was funny." (me too) Joyce Carol Oates: "Revenge is living well, without you." (oh snap!) Joan Rivers: "Liars, hysterectomy didn't improve sex life!" (uhhhhhh...?) Here is one possible one: "I shot myself in the leg." - Plaxico Burress. Ok, last Plaxico joke of the day, promise. “Plaxico Burress”: The New FAIL?

For at least the rest of this week, Plaxico Burress - the NY Giants wide receiver who shot himself in the leg by accident and got himself suspended - will be taking 30% of all headline real estate. I expect at least 3 Lettermen Top Ten lists about him, 2 Conan O'Brien bits, a more Daily Show segments covering his newsmaking. And while questions get sorted out about why he had a gun in his sweatpants/holster (same thing), a question for the internets is burning: Will Burress' name be the new term for FAIL? Thinking I was surely days old on this theory, I clicked over to the sanctuary of holy internet language, Urban Dictionary, and was surprised to find that the only definition associated with the name Plaxico was a verb meaning to snag a pass from someone due to your size over theirs.

Surely, this will change soon. Because for whatever reason, bringing a gun into a nightclub and misfiring into your own leg is an act that could cement your name into the halls of culture as a term for blowing it pretty big.....like shooting yourself in the leg in a nightclub. For instance, you are showing off in your neighborhood, being reckless and nonchalant with your car as it rolls on in neutral, trying to "ghost ride the whip" as they say and BAM!!! You hit a telephone pole. Minimally hurt, but now your car is totaled. And you just PLAXICO BURRESSED your car!! Or you're showing off in the office on the nerf goal, you go to dunk the ball, slip, fall onto another co-worker, break the office chair, and awkwardly grope your cubicle mate trying to get up. PLAXICOOOOOOOO!! SOMEONE JUST GOT PLAXICO'D!!! All I'm sayin' is...it could work.

My roommate found a book from the mid-90s "Computers For Busy People" series in a thrift store this weekend, and I couldn't believe how dated and insulting the advice read, like a quack anthropology textbook from the 30s or something (the negroe's cranium is that of a more criminal nature...) My favorite part, though, was the 90s-ass cover illustration showing "Busy People":

How To Use The Internets Rule #1: Do not shave in your car while driving and talking on a cell phone, no matter how busy you are. Rule #2: Now that you're alive, the rest of the internet is pretty easy to figure out.

Sean Penn Stares A Hole In James Franco’s Beautiful Soul

While the reviews for Milk are pourin' in (like milk...wakka wakka...unnngh), it's being reported that Sean Penn wanted more love scenes with James Franco than there were in the original script. But look at this picture of the co-stars together...c'mon....I don't buy it. Not by the way Sean Penn is standing next to James Franco, eyeing James Franco...deeply...softly...like a roaring wave that scoops you up, pulls you in, and then crashes over you, taking your breath away in a rush of fury and passion, just before you come up for a deeeeeeep breath of air (gaaaaaasp!).... No. I don't buy that. C'mon.

good morning! with britney spears being on a mega high this week - of course some people are trying to drag her down - this week's new STAR magazine is featuring ms. spears front & center with a claim she's on a 'deadly diet' - and that's how she's been able to drop a few pounds - i'm seriously hoping she hasn't prescribed to any risky weight loss plans - i have to say she looks great right now and is miles away from those oh so crazy days (like when she shaved her head almost a year ago - that was so totally insane) i can't wait to see her in concert her in los angeles on april 16th - and i'm thrilled about pussycat dolls opening for her - i've been dying to see those gals play live! popbytes over & out for now...xoxo
